Seven Day Sacred Clown Training, February 2011

Participants from Northern Europe attended the February retreat, the first since the new dance studio, Sala Luz was built. As its name suggests, this space is full of light and its many windows mean you can enjoy the gardens from inside the room itself. Together with under-floor heating and a sprung floor, it really is an ideal space for rehearsals and performances that we hope many people can benefit from.

This time, our retreat participants happened to be very experienced performers, so it suited the group to work towards an event. We decided to create a street performance full of dance and mime-clowning and also juggling. This performance was developed through improvisations and used recorded music.

We performed it on a sunny Sunday in Puerto, besides the Iglesia de San Francisco. Many people stood and watched, and enjoyed the light-hearted presentation.

“Our performance included a clown procession, led by Didier to and from our minibus in character, and I found this a great way to investigate improvisation in a way which felt safe and spontaneous.” (Lyndi Smith)
